EDITORS COMMENTS
Francois Coli: The French Aviator and Navigator Lost in the 1927 Transatlantic Flight This evocative photograph captures the determined and focused gaze of French aviator and navigator Francois Coli (1881-1927), as he prepares for his fateful attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Coli is seen here dressed in his pilot's jacket and helmet, with goggles perched on his forehead, and a cigarette dangling from his lips. The year is 1927, a time when the spirit of adventure and innovation was driving the world forward at an unprecedented pace. Coli, a decorated military pilot and experienced navigator, was no stranger to risk-taking. Along with his flying partner, Charles Nungesser, they had set their sights on becoming the first pilots to fly non-stop from New York to Paris. The two men had named their plane "The White Bird," and with the support of a wealthy backer, they embarked on their daring journey on May 8, 1927. However, their ambitious plan was not to be. On May 21, 1927, just 12 days into their journey, "The White Bird" disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean. Despite extensive search efforts, no trace of the plane or its occupants was ever found. The disappearance of Coli and Nungesser cast a pall over the aviation community, and their names became synonymous with the dangers and mysteries of early aviation. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of early aviators like Francois Coli, who pushed the boundaries of what was possible in the pursuit of adventure and discovery. Despite the tragic outcome of their journey, their legacy continues to inspire and captivate us to this day.
