Title: A Devoted Soul: Saint Francisco de Borgia, the Noble Jesuit Saint Francisco de Borgia, born in 1510 in the Spanish kingdom of Aragon, was a nobleman who served at the court of Emperor Charles V. His life took an unexpected turn when his beloved wife, Isabel de Castro, passed away. Grief-stricken and seeking solace, Francisco left his worldly possessions behind and joined the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, in 1547. In this evocative image, Francisco de Borgia is depicted as a pious and contemplative figure, dressed in the simple brown robes of a Jesuit. His noble lineage and courtly background contrast sharply with his new life of humility and devotion. The image captures the profound transformation that occurred within him, as he left behind the opulence of the royal court to dedicate himself to the service of the Church and the spread of the Christian faith. As a Jesuit, Francisco quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the third Superior General of the Order in 1565.
