Francis Bacon (1561-1626)

Francis Bacon philosopher, statesman, scientist, historian and cryptologist. Coloured portrait of the English philosopher Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626). His other titles included Baron Verulam and Viscount of St. Albans. Bacon attempted to review all branches of science. He attacked reasoning by deduction, as taught by Aristotle. Bacon argued that scientific laws had to be induced, being established as generalisations drawn out from specific observations. Although Bacon was generally behind the scientific knowledge of his time, his writings made the experimental study of science fashionable. His book New Atlantis inspired a group of scientists to found the Royal Society for Improving Natural Knowledge in 1660

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed figure of Sir Francis Bacon, a multifaceted English philosopher, statesman, scientist, historian, and cryptologist. With his piercing gaze and distinguished presence, Bacon's coloured portrait captures the essence of a man who left an indelible mark on various fields. Known by titles such as Baron Verulam and Viscount of St. Albans, Bacon was a trailblazer in challenging traditional modes of reasoning. He vehemently criticized Aristotle's deductive approach to knowledge and championed the idea that scientific laws should be derived from specific observations—a concept known as induction. While Bacon may not have been at the forefront of scientific knowledge during his time, his writings were instrumental in popularizing experimental study within science. His influential book "New Atlantis" even inspired a group of scientists to establish the Royal Society for Improving Natural Knowledge in 1660—an institution that continues to shape scientific progress today. Beyond his contributions to science, this photograph serves as a testament to Bacon's historical significance and enduring legacy. As one delves into the rich tapestry of history and explores notable personalities who shaped our worldviews, Francis Bacon undoubtedly stands tall among them—a true historic personality whose impact reverberates through time.
