Phonovision, 1920s video disc

Phonovision, 1920s video disc, coloured photograph. This is a standard 78 rpm (revolutions per minute) gramophone disc, used by the Scottish engineer John Logie Baird (1888-1946) to record the output from his television system. The principle is the same as a gramophone, with an electromagnetic needle used instead to detect and convert the indentations on the disc back into light and sound on a television screen. Baird was granted a patent on his Phonovision system in 1928, but the image quality was poor compared to cinemas. Original photograph published in Television (Dinsdale, 1928)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured photograph showcases a remarkable piece of technological history - the Phonovision, a video disc from the 1920s. Developed by Scottish engineer John Logie Baird, this standard 78 rpm gramophone disc served as a recording medium for his television system. Similar to a traditional gramophone, an electromagnetic needle was employed to detect and convert the indentations on the disc into light and sound on a television screen. Although Baird obtained a patent for his Phonovision system in 1928, its image quality paled in comparison to that of cinemas during that era. Nevertheless, this prototype represented an early milestone in communication technology and paved the way for future advancements in visual media. The circular shape of this historic artifact evokes nostalgia for bygone eras when vinyl records were treasured possessions. Its significance lies not only as a storage medium but also as evidence of Baird's pioneering efforts in bringing moving images into people's homes. Published originally in Television (Dinsdale, 1928), this photograph captures both the beauty and limitations of early television technology. As we gaze upon this intriguing snapshot from our past, it serves as a reminder of how far we have come since those humble beginnings while honoring the ingenuity and perseverance of visionaries like John Logie Baird.
