Blepharisma ciliate protozoan, SEM C019 / 0228

Blepharisma ciliate protozoan, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These tiny single-celled organisms are found in freshwater and marine habitats. It feeds on bacteria and decaying organic matter, which it filters through membranelles in its primitive mouth, known as a buccal cavity (upper centre). The membranelles, rows of fused cilia (short microscopic hairs), are also used for locomotion. Magnification: x500 when printed at 10 centimetres tall. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate beauty of a Blepharisma ciliate protozoan, a tiny single-celled organism found in both freshwater and marine habitats. Its vibrant colors come to life under the scanning electron microscope (SEM), revealing its unique features and behavior. The Blepharisma ciliate feeds on bacteria and decaying organic matter, utilizing membranelles in its primitive mouth, known as a buccal cavity. These membranelles are rows of fused cilia, short microscopic hairs that not only aid in filtering food but also serve as means of locomotion for this fascinating creature. With a magnification of x500 when printed at 10 centimeters tall, this image allows us to appreciate the complexity hidden within these unicellular organisms. The blue background provides an ethereal backdrop against which the delicate structures and vibrant hues stand out. As we delve into the world of microbiology, it is awe-inspiring to witness such intricate details at such minuscule scales. This print serves as a testament to nature's diversity and reminds us that even within seemingly simple organisms lie wonders waiting to be discovered. Credit goes to Steve Gschmeissner from Science Photo Library for capturing this mesmerizing snapshot that combines artistry with scientific exploration. It invites us into the realm of blepharismas while reminding us of our planet's rich biodiversity.
