Stephenson's Lamp, also known as the "miner's safety lamp," features in the first four diagrams. Its unique design included a glass chimney and a wick, which burned in a pool of water to prevent the lamp from causing a gas explosion. This groundbreaking invention significantly reduced mining accidents caused by coal gas. On the right, Davy's Lamp (5) stands as another monumental safety innovation. Designed by Sir Humphry Davy, the lamp used a jet of light to burn off the inflammable gases surrounding the miner, creating a protective bubble of air.
