A Moment of Respite: A River Trip on the Thames for Wounded Soldiers, 1915 Amidst the tumultuous backdrop of the First World War, a poignant moment of respite unfolded on the serene waters of the River Thames. In this evocative photograph, we witness a group of convalescent soldiers, their faces etched with the signs of their harrowing experiences, embarking on a much-needed excursion. Organized by the compassionate machine-managers at the Illustrated London News and Sketch Ltd., this upriver trip from Kingston to Walton and back was a heartfelt gesture of appreciation and solidarity for the brave men recovering at the Victoria Hospital in Chelsea. The journey began as a private motor bus conveyed the soldiers from the hospital to Kingston bridge, where they eagerly boarded the Sunbury Belle.
