EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph print, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back to the 11th century as we behold three Anglo-Norman men in their authentic outdoor attire. The Normans, descendants of the Vikings who invaded England in 1066, brought with them a new culture that significantly influenced the English way of life. The first figure on the left wears a hauberk, a coat of mail, and a surcoat, often emblazoned with his family crest or a symbol of his occupation. A conical helmet with a nasal guard protects his head, while a shield, adorned with a cross, rests on his left arm. His legs are covered by hose, held up by a belt, and he wears a pair of sturdy leather boots. The second man, in the middle, dons a similar hauberk and surcoat, but his surcoat bears the emblem of a lion. He wears a simple round helmet, and his legs are protected by hose and a pair of high leather boots. A quiver filled with arrows slung across his back signifies his proficiency as an archer. The third man, on the right, is dressed in a simple tunic, held up by a belt, and a pair of hose. He wears a simple woolen cloak, fastened with a brooch, and a pair of leather shoes. His hair is short and neatly combed, and he carries a long staff, possibly used for walking or as a weapon. The trio's outdoor setting, with a backdrop of trees and a clear blue sky, adds to the sense of authenticity and transports us back to the past. Their stoic expressions and postures convey a sense of strength, resilience, and pride, making this photograph print a captivating addition to any historical collection.
