EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Fotheringhay Castle - A Medieval Fortress with a Royal Past Fotheringhay Castle, located in Northamptonshire (TL0692/37), is an intriguing medieval fortress that has witnessed significant historical events. This aerial photograph by Damian Grady from Historic England provides a unique perspective of its earthworks, revealing the complex layout and grandeur of this once-imposing structure. Fotheringhay Castle was built in the late 15th century by the powerful Neville family, who were Earls of Warwick and later Earls of Northumberland. The castle was strategically positioned on a bend of the River Nene, offering a commanding view of the surrounding countryside. Its earthworks, visible in this image, include a moat, outer bailey, inner bailey, and a keep. The castle's most famous resident was Mary, Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned there in 1569. She was later tried and executed on nearby Fotheringhay Church grounds in 1587. The castle's association with Mary, Queen of Scots, adds a royal and tragic dimension to its history. Despite its impressive past, Fotheringhay Castle fell into ruin after the English Civil War. Today, it is in the care of English Heritage and is open to the public for exploration. Visitors can walk among the castle's earthworks, imagining the lives of those who once lived and died within its walls. This aerial photograph by Damian Grady offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, revealing the layout and history of Fotheringhay Castle. It serves as a reminder of the rich heritage that lies hidden within the English countryside.
