EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the charming village of Tregony in Cornwall, capturing a moment frozen in time in 1957. The view is from the clock tower along Fore Street, offering a glimpse into the daily life of this picturesque corner of England. On the left side of the picture stands the magnificent clock tower, an architectural gem that was erected back in 1833. Its presence adds a touch of elegance to the scene. To its right, we see Estelle ladies hairdresser, a quaint establishment that likely catered to the fashion-conscious women of Tregony at that time. As our eyes wander further down Fore Street, we notice a petrol pump and an accompanying sign reading "Garage and Parking" indicating that even then cars were becoming part of everyday life for villagers. The next building along is none other than the Kings Arms public house - surely a hub for socializing and merriment. The street itself exudes an air of tranquility as it gently curves to the left after another shop on its left-hand side. This photograph by Charles Woolf captures not just buildings but also tells tales about community spirit, local businesses, and simpler times. Thanks to this remarkable image preserved by Joyce Greenham at Royal Cornwall Museum, we are transported back over six decades ago to witness firsthand how life unfolded on Fore Street in Tregony during one sunny day in 1957.
