Floris IV, Count of Holland (1211-1296), is depicted in this stunning image as he prepared for a tournament in the year 1223. Born in The Hague, Holland, Floris IV was the eldest son of Count William I of Holland and Matilda of Brabant. He ascended to the countship upon his father's death in 1222. Floris IV was a significant figure during the 13th century in the Low Countries, a time marked by political instability and power struggles between various feudal lords. Tournaments were an integral part of the medieval nobility's social and military life. They served as a platform for knights to showcase their skills, courage, and horsemanship.
