EDITORS COMMENTS
Floris IV, Count of Holland (1211-1296), is depicted in this stunning image as he prepared for a tournament in the year 1223. The historical print, held by Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the Count in full armor, ready to engage in the chivalric games that were an essential part of medieval court life. Born in The Hague, Holland, Floris IV was the eldest son of Count William I of Holland and Matilda of Brabant. He ascended to the countship upon his father's death in 1222. Floris IV was a significant figure during the 13th century in the Low Countries, a time marked by political instability and power struggles between various feudal lords. Tournaments were an integral part of the medieval nobility's social and military life. They served as a platform for knights to showcase their skills, courage, and horsemanship. The tournaments also provided an opportunity for alliances to be formed and strengthened, and disputes to be settled peacefully. In this image, Floris IV is seen wearing a suit of armor that was common during the 13th century. The armor consisted of a gorget, a helmet with a visor, a breastplate, a backplate, and arm and leg protection. The Count's shield bears the arms of Holland, which consisted of a lion rampant on a red background. Floris IV's reign was marked by military campaigns against neighboring territories, including Flanders and Brabant. He also played a significant role in the Fifth Crusade, which aimed to recapture the Holy Land from the Muslims. Despite his military exploits, Floris IV is also remembered for his patronage of the arts and his efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. This historical print offers a glimpse into the life of a medieval count, showcasing the armor, weapons, and customs of the time. It serves as a reminder of the rich history and culture of the Low Countries during the Middle Ages.
