EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the last cruise of five historic steam warships, which once played a crucial role in the defense of the British coastline. From left to right, the monitors Hydra, Glatton, Cyclops, Gorgon, and Hecate were all part of the Royal Navy's Coastal Defense Fleet, which saw active service during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These monitors, which were designed to protect against torpedo attacks and minefields, were an essential component of the British naval forces during a time of great geopolitical tension. They were primarily used for coastal defense and were not intended for long-range engagements or high-seas battles. The Hydra, Glatton, Cyclops, Gorgon, and Hecate were all built between 1893 and 1902 and were retired from active service between 1919 and 1922. In this photograph, taken in the early 20th century, they are seen making their final voyage, likely on their way to be scrapped or converted for other uses. The monitors' distinctive features are on full display in this photograph. Their flat-bottomed hulls, designed for shallow waters, are visible, as are their large, protective bulwarks and their gun turrets. The intricate details of their steam engines and boilers can also be seen, a testament to the advanced technology of the time. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the history and importance of these steam warships, which once played a vital role in protecting the British coastline and maintaining the country's naval supremacy. It is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on maritime history and the evolution of naval warfare.
