EDITORS COMMENTS
Pelorus Jack: New Zealand's Famous Rissos Dolphin Escort This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Pelorus Jack, a Rissos dolphin (Grampus griseus) renowned for his extraordinary behavior in Cook Strait, New Zealand. Pelorus Jack gained fame between 1888 and 1912 as he regularly accompanied ships through the treacherous waters between Cape Francis and Collinet Point, near French Pass. This channel was a crucial shipping route connecting Wellington and Nelson. The striking image, believed to have been taken around 1908, shows Pelorus Jack swimming alongside a vessel, his sleek body gliding through the water in perfect harmony with the ship. His white underbelly contrasts sharply with the dark waters, making him an easily recognizable and intriguing sight for sailors and passengers. Pelorus Jack's unique behavior captured the imagination of the public, and he became a beloved local legend. However, this fame came at a cost. In 1904, the New Zealand Parliament passed the Pelorus Jack Protection Act to safeguard the dolphin from hunters. Despite this, Pelorus Jack was unfortunately shot at from a passing ship. The act was a testament to the growing awareness of the importance of protecting marine life and the natural wonders that make New Zealand's waters so special. Today, Pelorus Jack remains an enduring symbol of the unique connection between humans and the natural world. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving marine life and the wonders of the ocean that continue to inspire and captivate us.
