First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY)
A woman cyclist first aid scout of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY), riding along in her distinctive uniform. The FANY was created in 1907 as a first aid link between front-line fighting units and field hospitals. During the First World War FANY members ran field hospitals, drove ambulances and set up soup kitchens and troop canteens, often under dangerous conditions. By the time of the Armistice in November 1918 they had been awarded many decorations for bravery, including 17 Military Medals, 1 Legion d Honneur and 27 Croix de Guerre. They also served during the Second World War, and the organisation is still in existence today

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determination and courage of a First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) member during the First World War. The woman cyclist, dressed in her distinctive FANY uniform, rides along a dusty street with a determined expression on her face. Established in 1907, FANY was a volunteer organization that served as a vital link between front-line fighting units and field hospitals. During the war, FANY members ran field hospitals, drove ambulances, and set up soup kitchens and troop canteens, often under dangerous conditions. The FANY uniform, complete with cap, chin strap, and gloves, exudes an Edwardian air, yet the scene is far from the comforts of home. The woman's bike, with its large basket and medical supplies, is a testament to the mobile nature of her work. The world was changing rapidly around her, and she was at the forefront of it all. By the time of the Armistice in November 1918, FANY members had been awarded many decorations for bravery, including 17 Military Medals, 1 Legion d'Honneur, and 27 Croix de Guerre. They also served during the Second World War, and the organization is still in existence today. This historical photograph is a reminder of the sacrifices and contributions made by these brave women during two world wars.
