EDITORS COMMENTS
Fire in Winnipeg, Canada: A Historical Snapshot of the Bulman Block Fire of October 11, 1904 This evocative image captures the aftermath of one of Winnipeg, Canada's most significant fires in its history. The Bulman Block fire, which broke out on October 11, 1904, consumed the Bulman Block and the adjoining Ashdown building, leaving only the Duffin Block standing. The fire began in the Bulman Block, which was located behind the Duffin Block, and quickly spread to the Ashdown building. The Bulman Block, which housed various businesses, including the Birt Saddlery, was completely razed to the ground. The Duffin Block, which was located in front of the Bulman Block, was reduced to one storey due to the intense heat and flames. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but it is believed to have started in the Bulman Block's basement. Despite the extensive damage, the Duffin Block, which was originally a two-storey building, miraculously survived the inferno. To this day, the Bulman site remains vacant, while the Duffin block, which now stands as a testament to the past, still stands as a one-storey building. This historical photograph offers a glimpse into Winnipeg's past, reminding us of the destructive power of fire and the resilience of the community that rebuilt after the disaster.
