Khor Rori, ruins of an ancient South Arabian town, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Oman

Inscriptions at Khor Rouri reports that the town, called Sumhuram, was founded on royal initiative and settled by a┼¥Ôé¼adramite emigrants. Dhofar was the main source of frankincense in the ancient period, and it seems likely that the foundation of the settlement was in part motivated by a Hadramite wish to control the production of this valuable commodity.
In 2000 it was added to the Unesco world heritage list.
Today, visitors to the site can find Bronze Age fortifications from the small fortified town as well as a local palace ascribed to the Queen of Sheba

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent ruins of Khor Rori, an ancient South Arabian town nestled in the heart of Oman. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these remnants hold a rich history that dates back centuries. The inscriptions at Khor Rouri reveal that this town, known as Sumhuram, was established under royal patronage and populated by Hadramite emigrants. Situated in Dhofar, a region renowned for its production of frankincense during ancient times, it is believed that the settlement was strategically founded to control this prized commodity. Added to the prestigious UNESCO list in 2000, Khor Rori continues to captivate visitors with its Bronze Age fortifications and a local palace attributed to the legendary Queen of Sheba. As one explores this site today, they are transported back in time to witness the remnants of an advanced civilization. In Frans Sellies' masterful photograph, we see the picturesque harbor city against a backdrop of clear blue skies. The stone structures stand tall amidst their surroundings - silent witnesses to centuries gone by. The image captures not only architectural beauty but also evokes feelings of awe and wonder at humanity's ability to create such enduring marvels. This print serves as a reminder of our shared past and invites us on a journey through time.
