EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing view over Bryant Park in New York City during the 1940s. Designed by renowned architect Thomas Hastings, this urban oasis is beautifully showcased from a northeast perspective. At the heart of the park stands the iconic New York Public Library, an architectural masterpiece designed by Carrère and Hastings, completed in 1911. The skyline is dominated by impressive skyscrapers that symbolize the city's ambition and grandeur. From left to right, we can see notable landmarks such as 500 Fifth Avenue, with its sleek design crafted by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon in 1931. Partially obscured but still commanding attention is the majestic Chrysler Building (1930), created by William Van Alen and crowned with its distinctive spire. Adjacent to it stands the Lincoln Building (1930) designed by J. E. R. Carpenter while partially obscuring our view of the Chrysler Building. The Chanin Building (1929) showcases Sloan & Robertson's architectural prowess alongside Charles F. Moyer Company's Lefcourt Colonial Building (1929). The American Radiator Building (later known as American Standard Building) flaunts its striking black and white exterior; Hood & Fouilhoux were responsible for this remarkable creation in 1924. Completing this breathtaking panorama is 10 East 40th Street on the far right side of the image. Photographer Frederic Lewis has masterfully captured this moment in time when nature intertwines harmoniously with man.
