The peace church in Swidnica, Poland

The Churches of Peace in Jawor and Swidnica in Silesia were named after the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 which permitted the Lutherans in the Roman Catholic parts of Silesia to build three Evangelical churches from wood, loam and straw outside the city walls, without steeples and church bells.Only two of the three churches remain and in 2001 they were placed on the Unesco world heritage list

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene beauty of the Peace Church in Swidnica, Poland. Located in Silesia, this historic church is one of two remaining churches built under the permission granted by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. The agreement allowed Lutherans to construct Evangelical churches outside city walls using humble materials like wood, loam, and straw. The simplicity and spirituality emanating from this image are truly breathtaking. Against a clear blue sky, a solitary bare tree stands tall beside the peaceful church facade. The absence of people adds to the sense of tranquility and invites contemplation. As a place of worship, this architectural gem holds great significance for both locals and visitors alike. Its inclusion on UNESCO's world heritage list in 2001 further solidifies its cultural importance. Frans Sellies' photography skillfully captures every detail, showcasing not only the physical structure but also conveying an essence that goes beyond mere bricks and mortar. This image evokes a deep sense of silence and spirituality that resonates with viewers. Whether you appreciate religious architecture or simply seek moments of quiet reflection amidst nature's beauty, this print will transport you to a place where peace reigns supreme – reminding us all that sometimes it is through simplicity that we find true serenity.
