EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1897 showcases a series of wood engravings titled "Poplars". The left side of the image features eight detailed illustrations, starting with a short twig adorned with two deciduous buds and a blooming male catkin belonging to the Aspen tree (Populus tremula). Moving along, we see the intricate depiction of a male blossom, followed by a female catkin and its corresponding blossom. The progression continues with an illustration of ripe, closed fruit that eventually opens up to reveal its seeds covered in delicate hairs. Finally, we encounter a twig adorned with leaves from this majestic tree species. On the right side of the print, our attention is drawn to another type of poplar – the Black poplar (Populus nigra). Here, we observe a twig showcasing fruit catkins alongside three illustrations dedicated to the Balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera). These depict various stages: first, an elegant twig; next, an opened fruit revealing its inner structure; and finally, a single seed. These wood engravings were skillfully created in 1897 by ZU_09 and offer viewers not only aesthetic pleasure but also valuable botanical knowledge. Each engraving captures nature's intricacies while preserving them for generations to come. Whether you are an art enthusiast or simply appreciate nature's beauty, this timeless piece will undoubtedly enrich your surroundings with its historical charm.
