The Great British Seaside Gallery
Oh I do Like to Be Beside the Seaside; for decades British holidaymakers have flocked to the coast.
Since the early 18th century, when some of the wealthiest people first sought improved health by bathing in saltwater, the lure of the sea has been a part of the British way of life. Many seaside towns boast a tradition that stretches back to the coming of the railways in the Victorian period and some of them even earlier. Seaside holidays in Britain were in their heyday in the post war years of the 50's and 60's. It was the ultimate summer destination for most working-class families. Where they went mostly depended on where they lived; people from the north were more likely to go to places like Blackpool or Scarborough, whereas people from the south might choose Brighton, Southend or Margate. This is a collection of heartwarming nostalgic images featuring the British seaside; pebbly shores, deckchairs on the piers, bathing huts, fish and chips wrapped up in newspaper, and tasty ice creams.
