Fisherboat in Fernando de Noronha

Fernando de Noronha was discovered on 10 August 1503, barely a decade after Columbus first stumbled on the New World, by explorer Amerigo Vespucci. It was colonised by the Dutch, the French and finally the Portuguese, and until 20 years ago was a prison colony for criminals, gypsies and other undesirables, who were put to work building forts, making lime and weaving cloth. Since Darwin visited in 1832, the island has been a Mecca for naturalists and ecologists (it is now a national park). The island has just seven kilometres of surfaced road, the rest being dirt track and pathway, so buggies are the principal form of transport on the island. About 70% of it is protected, and development of any kind is drastically limited in the other 30 per cent. The island may be a wilderness, but its a domesticated, cared-for wilderness

The image features a traditional fisherboat peacefully floating in the bay, with the vibrant colors of the sunset reflecting off the calm waters. Fernando de Noronha, discovered over 500 years ago, has a rich history as a former prison colony turned national park. Its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and diverse marine life make it a paradise for nature lovers and ecologists alike. The island's rugged terrain is mostly untouched by development, with only seven kilometers of surfaced road and limited infrastructure. Buggies are the primary mode of transportation here, allowing visitors to explore its wild landscapes while preserving its delicate ecosystem.
