Fisherboat in Fernando de Noronha
Fernando de Noronha was discovered on 10 August 1503, barely a decade after Columbus first stumbled on the New World, by explorer Amerigo Vespucci. It was colonised by the Dutch, the French and finally the Portuguese, and until 20 years ago was a prison colony for criminals, gypsies and other undesirables, who were put to work building forts, making lime and weaving cloth. Since Darwin visited in 1832, the island has been a Mecca for naturalists and ecologists (it is now a national park). The island has just seven kilometres of surfaced road, the rest being dirt track and pathway, so buggies are the principal form of transport on the island. About 70% of it is protected, and development of any kind is drastically limited in the other 30 per cent. The island may be a wilderness, but its a domesticated, cared-for wilderness
