Bridalveil Falls, California, D800, Landscape, Nikon, Toti, Tunnel View, William Toti

It was the last day of our Yosemite trip in April 2013. We were scheduled to fly out early the next morning and were planning to make the 4-hour drive to San Francisco that day. When we woke up and saw snow on the ground, we cancelled breakfast and raced up to tunnel view because we knew the snowy scene would be spectacular. And it was. The initial omen: only a coyote awaited us in the parking lot. I screamed as I approached the guardrail with my camera (and I m not a screamer)-- I knew this would be the shot I had been waiting for. My initial intent was to compose and expose for black-and-white only (shooting in raw and exposing to the left), but when I saw the balanced color composition I decided to include this version in my portfolio as well. And I guess I made the right decision. While I still like my black-and-white version better, this one has received much more attention and positive feedback. The moral, relearned so many times: being lucky (on timing and weather) is as important as being good (in technique). And don t try to guess what the public reaction will be, I would have guessed wrong that my black-and-white version would have received more accolades than this one. And as it turned out, I didn t need to worry about exposing to the left. I had to adjust the exposure in very small increments, but the incredible dynamic range of the D800 allowed me to capture with a single exposure

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking beauty of Bridalveil Falls in California. Taken by renowned photographer William Toti, this image was captured on the last day of his Yosemite trip in April 2013. With plans to drive to San Francisco that day, Toti and his companions were pleasantly surprised to wake up to a snowy landscape. Determined not to miss out on this rare opportunity, they hurriedly made their way to Tunnel View. As Toti approached the guardrail with his camera in hand, he couldn't contain his excitement. He knew that this shot would be something special. Originally intending to capture the scene in black-and-white, he decided at the last moment to include a version with balanced colors as well. Little did Toti know that this decision would lead to unexpected success and recognition for his work. While he personally preferred the black-and-white version, it was this color composition that garnered more attention and positive feedback from viewers. Reflecting on this experience, Toti emphasizes the importance of luck when it comes to timing and weather conditions in photography. Additionally, he highlights how unpredictable public reactions can be – an important reminder not to make assumptions about audience preferences. With its stunning portrayal of nature's grandeur and meticulous technique employed by Toti using Nikon D800 camera's remarkable dynamic range capabilities, this print is sure to captivate any viewer who appreciates fine art photography.
