Snowy landscape with West Thumb Geyser Basin in winter, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA

West Thumb Geyser Basin was created approximately 162, 000 years ago when a magma chamber bulged up under the surface of the earth and subsequently cracked it along ring fracture zones. This in turn released the enclosed magma as lava and caused the surface above the emptied magma chamber to collapse. Water later filled the collapsed area of the caldera, forming an extension of Yellowstone Lake. This created the source of heat and water that feed the West Thumb Geyser Basin today

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the breathtaking beauty of a snowy landscape in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. The focal point of this image is the West Thumb Geyser Basin, a natural wonder that holds an intriguing geological history. Approximately 162,000 years ago, a magma chamber beneath the earth's surface caused cracks along ring fracture zones. As a result, lava erupted and led to the collapse of the land above the emptied chamber. Over time, water filled this sunken area known as a caldera and extended Yellowstone Lake. This transformation gave birth to the West Thumb Geyser Basin we see today. It serves as both a source of heat and water for these mesmerizing geysers. The winter setting adds an ethereal touch to this already enchanting scene. The pristine white snow blankets everything in sight while contrasting with the vibrant colors emitted by some geothermal features within the basin. Photographer Danita Delimont has masterfully captured this moment in time through her lens. Her keen eye for detail allows viewers to immerse themselves in nature's grandeur and appreciate its ever-changing wonders. Whether you are an admirer of fine art or simply someone who appreciates nature's marvels, this print will transport you to one of America's most iconic national parks – where geology meets tranquility amidst a snowy wonderland.
