View of a House, Manufactory, and Bazaar, in Calcutta, engraved by Francis Jukes

XJF130620 View of a House, Manufactory, and Bazaar, in Calcutta, engraved by Francis Jukes, 1795 (aquatint) by English School, (18th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: To...the Honble the United East India Company Thus... by... Francis Jukes (from an original picture in the possession of James Stewart Esq).
Black and white photograph of a hand-coloured aquatint. This aquatint was based on an original drawing made for James Steuart, who was head of a firm of coachmakers in Calcutta. The premises of his firm, Steuart and Company, are seen here, located behind the Old Court House where they remained from 1783 to 1907. (The Old Court House was knocked down in 1792, allowing a clear view down the Old Court House Street). As there were few suitable roads, the demand for coaches was relatively low. Instead, the company made palanquins and even elephant harnesses); English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a hand-coloured aquatint titled "View of a House, Manufactory, and Bazaar in Calcutta". Engraved by Francis Jukes in 1795, this exquisite print offers a glimpse into the bustling streets of colonial Calcutta. The aquatint was created based on an original drawing commissioned by James Steuart, the head of a renowned firm of coachmakers in Calcutta called Steuart and Company. The premises of their establishment can be seen in the image, situated behind the Old Court House. Interestingly, these premises served as their base from 1783 to 1907. During this period, there was limited demand for coaches due to the lack of suitable roads. As a result, Steuart and Company focused on crafting palanquins - portable enclosed carriages carried by bearers - as well as elephant harnesses. This unique aspect adds an intriguing layer to the historical significance captured within this artwork. Notably, the aquatint also provides us with an unobstructed view down Old Court House Street since its namesake building had been demolished in 1792. This vantage point allows us to witness various aspects of Indian life during that time: busy markets filled with locals going about their daily routines amidst factories and other buildings. Overall, this remarkable piece serves as both an artistic masterpiece engraved by Francis Jukes and a valuable historical record depicting life in colonial Calcutta under British rule.
