According to folklore, after the Battle of Hexham in 1464, Queen Margaret sought refuge in what is now known as The Queens Cave. It was here that she unexpectedly crossed paths with a daring robber. The scene beautifully captures the medieval setting, showcasing a dense forest with roots intertwining beneath their feet. Queen Margaret stands tall and regal, accompanied by her young son who clings onto her hand for protection. In contrast, the mysterious robber lurks nearby, his presence both threatening and intriguing. Although this legend served as inspiration for an 18th-century play by George Colman the Younger, historical records indicate that Queen Margaret had already fled to France before the battle occurred.
