EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable beaker from the Saljuq Period in Kashan, Iran. Created by the Persian School in the late 12th century, this exquisite piece of art is housed in the Freer Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian Institution in the USA. What makes this beaker truly extraordinary is that it is adorned with a complete narrative cycle from the Shahnama, also known as the Persian Book of Kings. This makes it a unique treasure within Islamic art. The intricate illustrations are organized into horizontal bands and depict various adventures of Bizhan and Manizha. The story begins with Firdawsi's beloved tale being told, leading to an enthralling climax where Rustam rescues Bizhan from imprisonment by Afrasiyab, Manizha's malevolent father. This pictorial cycle predates any other depictions of their romance by approximately one hundred years. Measuring 12x11.2x11.2 cm, this stone-paste beaker has been meticulously painted under glaze and over glaze with enamel technique. Its small size does not diminish its highly detailed imagery or its ability to captivate viewers. The acquisition of this masterpiece was made possible through Charles Lang Freer Endowment's generous purchase for the Freer Gallery of Art collection. Now preserved for all to admire, this stunning artifact offers us a glimpse into ancient Persian culture and storytelling traditions that continue to inspire awe today.
