An Artist Painting by the Sea, 1887 (w / c & bodycolour on paper)
2956823 An Artist Painting by the Sea, 1887 (w/c & bodycolour on paper) by Inchbold, John William (1830-88); 17.15x34.93 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: Inchbold was one of several young landscape artists to be inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites. The praise and patronage of Ruskin launched him on his career in 1855, but by the late 1850s he had moved away from the tenets of strict observation towards a more personal style and a looser, more experimental technique. Like the painter AW Hunt, he was also a poet, and he found it hard to make a living by his watercolours. In 1886A-7 he made his last long painting tour, exploring the Mediterranean coast from the south of France to Naples; our painting dates from this trip. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of an artist immersed in their craft, painting by the sea in 1887. The artwork, titled "An Artist Painting by the Sea" was created by John William Inchbold, a landscape artist inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites. Measuring 17.15x34.93 cm, this watercolor and bodycolour on paper piece showcases Inchbold's departure from strict observation towards a more personal style and experimental technique. As a poet as well as a painter, he struggled to make a living solely through his watercolors. During his last long painting tour in 1886-7, Inchbold explored the Mediterranean coast from France to Naples. This particular painting is believed to have been created during that trip. In the image, we see a lady diligently working at her easel while their lunch basket hangs high in the shade of a tree nearby. The scene exudes summertime vibes with its rocky cliffs and picturesque coastline. The artist has chosen to paint en plein air (outdoors), capturing both the beauty of nature and their own artistic process. This print is part of Fine Art Finder's collection and can be found at eThe Ms Gallery in London. It offers viewers an intimate glimpse into an artist's world - one filled with creativity, inspiration, and breathtaking coastal landscapes.
