Thomas Mifflin (1744-1800), c. 1757-59
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This portrait captures the youthful essence of Thomas Mifflin, a prominent figure in American history. Painted by Benjamin West between 1757 and 1759, this oil on canvas print showcases a generous three-quarter length depiction of a boy aged between 14 and 15 years old. Mifflin stands confidently to the left, his greyish brown eyes gazing directly at the viewer with an almost hazel hue. His dark brown hair is neatly tied with a black queue ribbon, adding to his refined appearance. Dressed in a dark blue broadcloth coat and breeches adorned with overspun buttons and velvet collar matching his purplish grey lining, he exudes elegance beyond his years. A green broadcloth waistcoat embellished with brass buttons complements his attire while white accessories such as neck cloth, shirt, ruffle, and stockings add contrast to the ensemble. Notably draped over Mifflin's left shoulder is a gold cord holding a powder horn while he firmly grasps a long fowling piece in his right hand. The landscape background painted in shades of grey, brown, olive green suffused with blue adds depth to the composition. Three game birds rest peacefully in the lower left corner of the picture further emphasizing Mifflin's connection to nature. Preserved within Philadelphia History Museum at the Atwater Kent as part of their Historical Society of Pennsylvania Collection, this remarkable artwork offers us an intimate glimpse into young Thomas Mifflin's life during this significant period in American history.
