EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning sleeved waistcoat from the early 18th century. Crafted with meticulous detail, this exquisite garment is made of fawn silk brocade adorned with an intricate "bizarre" design in brown, pale blue, and silver thread. The length of the waistcoat measures 105 cm and it is currently housed at the Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. The front of this sleeveless waistcoat features a single section that flares at the sides below the waist. It fastens from neck to hem with an impressive array of 43 small silver thread buttons and buttonholes stitched with silver thread. Notably, the ten lowest buttonholes have not been cut, adding an air of mystery to this remarkable piece. Additional details include side seams that open below the hip, a pocket on each side made from brown linen with a vertical slit under hanging flaps, and wider bottoms caught down at their tips. The neckline is elegantly finished with silk tape binding. The long sleeves are divided into two sections and fasten from wrist to elbow using six buttons. A significant aspect of this particular waistcoat is a piece of linen inscribed in ink reading "Fassett, Kingston on Thames" which has been stitched onto its back lining. This photograph provides us with a glimpse into fashion history while highlighting both artistic craftsmanship and attention to detail during this period.
