EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Helmet badge of the United Provinces Horse, dating back to 1904-1947. Crafted by renowned artist John Henry Foley, this silver and gilt badge depicts a horseman on a tablet with the battle honor "A Relief of Lucknow" above a scroll bearing the name of the auxiliary unit, "United Provinces Horse". The United Provinces Light Horse was formed in 1904 through the amalgamation of several esteemed cavalry units: Allahabad Light Horse, Cawnpore Light Horse, Gorakhpur Light Horse, Ghazipur Light Horse, and Oudh Light Horse. The design of this badge is reminiscent of an equestrian statue sculpted by Foley himself - that of Lieutenant-General Sir James Outram in Calcutta. Lieutenant-General Outram played a pivotal role during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) when he led operations to relieve the besieged city of Lucknow. This historical event is commemorated on this helmet badge as it bears resemblance to his statue. Preserved at London's National Army Museum as part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple's Indian Army Collection, this metal artifact serves as a testament to bravery and valor exhibited by those who served under its banner. Its intricate details and symbolic significance make it an invaluable addition to any collection dedicated to preserving military heritage.
