Photograph, India, North West Frontier, 1888.
Raiding by tribesmen from the Black Mountains of Indias North West Frontier culminated on 18 June 1888 when a British patrol was ambushed and two officers killed. Five columns of the Hazara Field Force under Major-General J. W. McQueen advanced into the rebellious area on 4 October. The Akazais and Hassanzais were brought to heel, and on 13 October the village at Maidan was destroyed. McQueen then moved on to punish the remaining hostile tribes. Operations were concluded by 14 November.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment in history during the Black Mountain Expedition of 1888. The image showcases the Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany's) as they navigate through the rugged terrain of India's North West Frontier. The expedition was prompted by a series of raids carried out by tribesmen from the Black Mountains, which resulted in the tragic loss of two British officers. In response, Major-General J. W. McQueen led five columns of the Hazara Field Force into this rebellious region on October 4th. The photograph offers a glimpse into the intense military operations that unfolded during this campaign. It shows members of the Seaforth Highlanders amidst their mission to bring order and stability to these hostile lands. Their determined expressions and well-equipped attire reflect their commitment to restoring peace. As part of their efforts, McQueen's forces successfully subdued both Akazais and Hassanzais tribes before destroying Maidan village on October 13th. This display of strength sent a clear message to remaining hostile tribes who were subsequently dealt with swiftly. Preserved within an album compiled by an officer from the 40th Pathans around 1890, this historical print serves as a testament to bravery and resilience exhibited by those involved in quelling unrest along India's frontier regions. Now housed at London's National Army Museum, this evocative photograph allows us to reflect upon past conflicts while acknowledging the sacrifices made by those who fought for peace in distant lands centuries ago.
