EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pack animal trunk from the 2nd Afghan War, dating back to around 1879. Crafted with precision and care, this wooden trunk is adorned with a layer of exquisite leather. Once belonging to the esteemed 67th (the South Hampshire) Regiment of Foot, it played an integral role in their arduous journey alongside Major-General Frederick Roberts. The Controller General of Supply and Transport for the march described the challenging conditions they faced during their expedition. The narrow pathways, steep terrains, and formidable mountain passes demanded reliable transportation options like pack-animals. Undeterred by these obstacles and enduring scorching temperatures, Roberts' men covered an impressive distance of 280 miles (400km) in just 20 days while losing minimal casualties. Their relentless determination paid off on September 1st, 1880 when they achieved a decisive victory over Ayub Khan outside Kandahar. This triumph not only secured their position but also provided much-needed relief to the besieged garrison. Preserved within this photograph is not just a mere artifact but also a testament to human resilience and adaptability in times of adversity. It serves as a reminder that even amidst treacherous landscapes and hostile environments, courage can prevail against all odds. Displayed at the National Army Museum in London, this image captures history frozen in time – an emblematic representation of bravery etched into wood and leather forevermore.
