EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable cap badge from the United Provinces Horse, dating back to 1904-1947. Crafted with exquisite detail, this silver and gilt badge features a horseman on a tablet adorned with the battle honor "A Relief of Lucknow" positioned above a scroll displaying the auxiliary unit's name, "United Provinces Horse". The United Provinces Light Horse was established by merging several esteemed cavalry units including the Allahabad Light Horse, Cawnpore Light Horse, Gorakhpur Light Horse, Ghazipur Light Horse, and Oudh Light Horse. This amalgamation brought together their rich histories and traditions under one banner. Notably, the figure of the horseman depicted in this badge bears resemblance to Lieutenant-General Sir James Outram (1803-1863), as sculpted by John Henry Foley in his equestrian statue located in Calcutta. Outram played a pivotal role during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) when he led operations to relieve Lucknow from its besieged state. This exceptional piece is part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple's Indian Army Collection housed at London's National Army Museum. Its historical significance lies not only in its representation of an illustrious cavalry unit but also in its connection to one of India's most significant military campaigns. Captured beautifully through photography by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, this print allows us to appreciate both the artistry and historical importance encapsulated within this splendid cap badge.
