Engraving from, A A Representation of the Cloathing of His Majestys Houshold and of all the Forces upon the Establishments of Great Britain 1742A, a volume of 104 coloured engravings, published 1742 circa.
Like many other cavalry regiments formed in 1685, this unit was created by merging several existing troops of cavalry. It was established to shore up James IIs powerbase in London less than a month after the defeat of the Monmouth Rebellion, but three years later it went over from James to William III.
It fought for William at the Boyne and in the Low Countries and rose from the 6th to the 5th Regiment of Horse in 1691. The regiment was placed on the Irish Establishment in 1699 and remained there for over a hundred years, other than a brief period spent raiding the French coast in 1795.); eNational Army Museum; out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, titled "4th Regiment of Dragoons" takes us back to the 18th century and offers a glimpse into the military history of Great Britain. Created by an unknown artist, this print is housed in the National Army Museum in London. The image showcases a regiment of dragoons, mounted soldiers who were trained to fight on horseback but also dismount and engage in infantry combat when necessary. The intricate details captured by the artist bring these brave warriors to life, their uniforms adorned with vibrant colors that symbolize their allegiance. The 4th Regiment of Dragoons was formed during a tumultuous period in British history. Originally established to support James II's reign after the Monmouth Rebellion, it later pledged its loyalty to William III. The regiment played significant roles in pivotal battles such as the Boyne and campaigns fought across Low Countries. For over a hundred years, this esteemed unit remained stationed on Irish soil before briefly embarking on raids along the French coast in 1795. This historical context adds depth and significance to this remarkable artwork. As we gaze upon this engraving from "A Representation of the Cloathing of His Majestys Houshold and all Forces upon Establishments of Great Britain 1742" we are transported back through time, marveling at both artistic skill and military valor encapsulated within its frame.
