Stereographs consist of two identical photographs paired in such a way that when seen through a special viewing instrument, a stereoscope, they appear as a three-dimensional images. By 1899 the photographs were mounted on thick card that was given a slight curvature to increase the illusion of depth. The Boer War was extensively stereographed by employees of the American firm of Underwood and Underwood. Boxed sets of 50, 100, and 150 views were issued.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting aftermath of the Boer War in 1901. The image showcases a wrecked railway bridge across the Valsch River, destroyed by retreating Boer forces. The destruction is evident as twisted metal and debris scatter the riverbanks, serving as a stark reminder of the brutal conflict that ravaged South Africa. Stereoscopic photography was used to create this three-dimensional image, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the scene's depth and detail. Underwood & Underwood, an American firm known for their extensive documentation of the Boer War, captured this moment with precision and artistry. The blown-up Railway Bridge at Kroonstadt stands as a symbol of resistance against British forces during this tumultuous period. It serves as a testament to both the destructive power of war and the resilience of those involved. This photograph is part of a larger collection titled "South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1" published by Underwood and Underwood. These boxed sets were highly sought after during that time, providing people with visual narratives from one of history's most significant conflicts. Preserved by London's National Army Museum, this print allows us to reflect on past events while reminding us never to forget the human cost associated with warfare.
