5920879 Victoria Infantry, South Africa, 1899 circa (b/w photo) by Underwood & Underwood (c.1881-1940); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Victoria Infantry shortly before they helped in the fight at Belmont, S. Africa, 1899 circa.
Stereoscopic photograph, Boer War, 1899 circa.
Colonial units like the First Victorian (Infantry and Mounted Infantry) Contingent proved to be among the most effective British troops at the Battle of Belmont (23-25 November 1899). Like their Boer enemies, they used their horses for transport rather than charging, advanced by fire and manouevre in loose formations and made good use of cover.

The image is part of a collection titled "South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1" published by Works and Sun Sculpture Studios. The colonial units, including the First Victorian Contingent (Infantry and Mounted Infantry), proved to be highly effective during this battle. It highlights not only the infantry's equipment but also their rifles and firearms. The parade-like formation adds an air of discipline and unity among these brave soldiers.
