EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the magnificent Orange River Bridge in South Africa, circa 1899. The bridge stands proudly, guarded and preserved by the British during a tumultuous time known as the Boer War. Stereoscopic photography was used to create this image, with two identical photographs paired together to give a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a special instrument called a stereoscope. By mounting the photographs on thick curved card, the illusion of depth is enhanced, transporting viewers back in time to witness this historic structure. The American firm Underwood and Underwood played a significant role in documenting the Boer War through stereographs like this one. They issued boxed sets containing various views of the war, allowing people to experience it from afar. Part of an extensive collection entitled "South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1" published by Underwood and Underwood, this photograph is now housed at London's National Army Museum. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of both its artistic beauty and historical significance. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity in bridging physical gaps while also symbolizing resilience amidst conflict.
