EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Halliday Cary Pick House in Alabama, taken in 1939 by renowned photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston. The house, located at 360 North College Street in Auburn, Lee County, is a significant part of Auburn University's history. Originally commissioned by Matthew Turner around 1840 as a wedding gift for his son, the house remained unoccupied by its intended residents. Despite this, it stands as an architectural masterpiece with symmetrical design and striking features that leave viewers awestruck. One of the most remarkable elements showcased in this image is the centrally located spiral staircase. Crafted entirely by hand from mahogany wood, it was built by a wandering French carpenter en route to New Orleans. What makes this staircase truly extraordinary is its apparent defiance of gravity – there are no visible means of support or center post holding it up; it simply floats effortlessly without resting on any wall. The photograph beautifully captures the intricate details and craftsmanship of this free-standing wooden feature. It serves as a testament to both American ingenuity and artistic excellence within architecture. Preserved through time thanks to Bridgeman Images' fine art print collection, this photograph allows us to appreciate not only the beauty but also the historical significance of this iconic structure within Alabama's rich architectural heritage.
