In this view of the Maidan Valley, which was situated near Kabul, Walton has depicted two seated tribesmen watching the long column of the Army of the Indus during its march on the Afghan capital. The Army had set out from the Punjab in December 1838 and by late March 1839 had reached Quetta. By the end of April it had taken Kandahar without a fight before advancing on the fort at Ghazni in July.
