Ruined Gateway of the Ancient Fortress of Sehwaun, 1838 circa (coloured lithograph)

5920147 Ruined Gateway of the Ancient Fortress of Sehwaun, 1838 circa (coloured lithograph) by Jackson, Sir Keith A. (fl.1838); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Ruined Gateway of the Ancient Fortress of Sehwaun, 1838 circa
Coloured lithograph from Views in Affghaunistaun from sketches taken during the Campaigns of the Army of the Indus, by W L Walton after Captain Sir Keith A Jackson, Bt, 4th (Queens Own) Light Dragoons, published by W H Allen and Co and T McLean.
Sehwan fort was located in Sindh on the west bank of the River Indus, about 80 miles (130km) from Hyderabad. The accompanying note provided by Jackson reads: On the north side of the town is the ruined castle or fortress of Sehwaun, by which it is completely commanded; this is perhaps the most extraordinary building on the Indus, and no doubt constructed before the invasion by Alexander the Macedonian. It consists of a natural mound sixty feet high, encased in many parts with burnt brick. In fact, the fortress and mount are so amalgamated, that it is difficult now to distinguish what portions of it are the work of art. The gate is opposite to the side of the town, and has evidently been an arched one. The Emperor Humaioon in AD 1541, attempted to take it, and was unsuccessful, it was invested by his son Acbar for seven months, who at length succeeded in its capture.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lithograph, titled "Ruined Gateway of the Ancient Fortress of Sehwaun, 1838 circa" takes us back in time to the majestic ruins of a once-mighty stronghold. Created by Sir Keith A. Jackson in 1838, this print offers a glimpse into the ancient past through intricate detail and vibrant hues. The fortress depicted in this artwork is located on the west bank of the River Indus, near Hyderabad in Sindh. Its commanding presence dominates the landscape, standing as a testament to its former glory. The fusion of natural terrain and man-made structures creates an awe-inspiring sight that leaves viewers pondering over its origins. Jackson's accompanying note sheds light on the historical significance of this remarkable edifice. Believed to have been constructed before Alexander the Great's invasion, it showcases architectural marvels that have withstood centuries of wear and tear. The arched gateway stands as a focal point within this composition, hinting at tales of conquest and resistance throughout history. As we gaze upon this lithograph from Views in Affghaunistaun series, our imagination transports us to an era long gone but not forgotten. We can almost hear echoes from battles fought within these walls and feel whispers carried by winds across time. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' preservation efforts and National Army Museum's collection, we are fortunate enough to witness such extraordinary pieces from our past come alive again through artistry and craftsmanship. This print serves as both a visual delight for art enthusiasts and a valuable historical document for those seeking knowledge about ancient fortresses like Sehwaun.
