Le Portel, the fishing village where this was painted, lies close to the south, in the Pas de Calais. Wyllie had scored a precocious success with his Dawn after the Storm in the British Royal Academy in 1869, winning the coveted Turner Gold Medal for landscape at the amazingly young age of 18, but in 1875 two of his pictures were refused by the RA and, disillusioned, Wyllie declared that the would give up painting and go to sea. Though by now the house at Wimereaux had fallen into the sea in a storm, Wyllie spent most of his time sailing and sketching about the coast there. He worked on on paper out of doors, with the sensitivity and panache of Boudin, but allied to system - as a sailor, Wyllie was vividly aware of the state of the tide, the time, the direction of the wind and the weather. This print showcases "Portel Fisher Folk" by William Lionel Wyllie, a renowned English artist from the 19th century. The artwork, created in 1875, is an oil on paper laid on panel and measures 12.7x21.5 cm. It belongs to a private collection and is currently housed at The Ms Gallery in London. Wyllie's childhood was spent in a house perched precariously on the beach at Wimereaux near Boulogne. This particular painting depicts the fishing village of Le Portel, located south of Wimereaux in Pas de Calais, France. At just 18 years old, Wyllie achieved great success with his landscape painting titled "Dawn after the Storm" winning the prestigious Turner Gold Medal for it at the British Royal Academy. The artist preferred working outdoors on paper with remarkable sensitivity and flair reminiscent of Boudin's style but also incorporated systematic elements due to his seafaring background - taking into account factors such as tide conditions, time of day, wind direction, and weather. A similar oil sketch painted around the same time can be found at South London Art Gallery while closely related watercolors exist within the National Maritime Museum. This exceptional piece captures both Wyllie's artistic talent and deep connection to maritime life.
