EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Emblema of Cleopatra Selene, a remarkable piece from the late 1st century BC to early 1st century AD. Crafted by Roman artisans, this parcel-gilt and silver sculpture stands at an impressive height of 17.4 cm. The Emblema depicts Cleopatra Selene II, also known as Cleopatra VIII of Egypt, who was the daughter of Greek Ptolemaic queen Cleopatra VII and Roman triumvir Mark Antony. The bust portrays a young woman adorned with an intricate elephant headdress that gracefully rests atop her head. The attention to detail is truly exceptional; each element, such as the raised trunk and tapering tusks of the elephant, has been meticulously crafted and inserted separately. Cleopatra Selene's striking features are beautifully captured in high relief: her luxuriant curly hair cascades in two rows of thick serpentine locks framing her face. Her large eyes with heavy upper lids draw you in while delicate incisions depict her brows and small mouth with a full lower lip. Adorned in a chiton crenellated along the collar and a himation embellished with symbolic creatures like scorpions, cobras, lionesses, lions, fruit, and wheat between them; this emblema exudes regality. Photographed by eChristies Images for Fine Art Finder from a private collection where it now resides; this mesmerizing image allows us to appreciate both its historical significance and artistic brilliance.
