Cover verso detail of note pasted on to front board
Quarto
" Al Clar: S. Angelo Contarini l autore" inscribed at foot of title page; note pasted in to front board by James David Forbes: " This " Difesa" was written by Galileo himself. This copy is therefore a presentation copy to one of the Contarini family, Venetian nobles who were his patrons. The writing is Galileos autograph as I verified in the public library at Venice from Galileos MSS with the aid of the polite librarian which ascertained the point beyond a doubt. I bought the book of Canciani the bookseller at Venice who had not remarked the inscription. March 1845 JDF.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a note pasted onto the front board of Difesa, a renowned work by Galileo. Created in 1845 by an anonymous Scottish artist, this pen and ink masterpiece is housed at The University of St. Andrews in Scotland, UK. The photograph provides a detailed glimpse into the cover verso of the book, where the note is prominently displayed. The inscription on the note reads: "Al Clar: S. Angelo Contarini l autore" which translates to "To Clarice S. Angelo Contarini, the author". This inscription reveals that this particular copy of Difesa was personally written by Galileo himself and presented as a gift to one of his esteemed patrons from the Contarini family, Venetian nobles. The authenticity and significance of this handwritten message were verified by James David Forbes in March 1845. Forbes meticulously examined Galileo's original manuscripts at the public library in Venice with assistance from a helpful librarian who confirmed its origin beyond any doubt. Additionally, Principal Forbes affixed his own account to the upper cover of this precious book detailing his acquisition in 1845. This further adds to its historical value and provenance. Through this remarkable print captured by Bridgeman Images for eUniversity of St. Andrews Library, viewers are transported back in time to witness an extraordinary piece of history – Galileo's personal dedication preserved for generations to come.
