EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Shooting, plate 3" takes us back to the year 1806. Engraved by R. G. Reeve and beautifully colored through lithography, this artwork measures 69x78.5 cm and is currently held in a private collection. The image showcases a serene rural landscape with lush forests and woodlands as its backdrop. In the foreground, two gentlemen are depicted enjoying a moment of relaxation during their hunting expedition. Both men are dressed elegantly in top hats and can be seen seated on wooden logs, engrossed in conversation. Accompanied by their loyal spaniels, these gundogs playfully roam around the clearing while their masters take respite from their shooting activities. One of the men leans on his walking stick or cane, emphasizing his leisurely demeanor. Intriguingly, amidst this tranquil scene lies a woodcock - an elusive game bird that adds an element of mystery to the composition. It seems as though the men have paused to discuss their next move or perhaps admire nature's beauty before continuing on with their adventure. Created by Wolstenholme Dean Snr. , an esteemed artist from the late 18th century to early 19th century Britain, this print captures not only a picturesque countryside but also offers insight into pastimes enjoyed by gentlemen of that era.
