EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Emblema of Cleopatra Selene, a stunning piece of art dating back to the late 1st century BC or early 1st century AD. Crafted by Roman artisans, this parcel-gilt and silver sculpture stands at an impressive height of 17.4 cm. The Emblema depicts Cleopatra Selene II, also known as Cleopatra VIII of Egypt, who was a Ptolemaic Princess and the only daughter of Greek queen Cleopatra VII and Roman triumvir Mark Antony. The sculpture is raised from a single sheet and sculpted in high relief, showcasing the bust of a young woman adorned with an intricate elephant headdress. Every detail on this artwork is meticulously crafted - from the raised trunk and tapering tusks projecting forward to the crosshatched skin pattern punctuated by central dots. The woman's head is slightly turned to her right, revealing luxuriant curly hair arranged in two rows of thick serpentine locks. Her striking face features heavy upper lids over large eyes with delicately incised brows. A full lower lip complements her drop-shaped philtrum and rounded chin. She wears a crenellated chiton along her collar and a himation embellished with various symbols including scorpions, cobras, lionesses, lions, fruit, and wheat. Certain elements such as portions of the headdress are gilt for added grandeur. This remarkable photograph allows us to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship captured within this ancient work of art that now resides in a private collection.
