EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the majestic presence of the oil tanker "La Charente" at sea in 1950. The image showcases the vessel's impressive size and sleek design as it glides through the water with grace. However, this ship has a remarkable history that adds depth to its visual appeal. Originally seized by the Germans in June 1940 while still under construction, it was completed by the Kriegsmarine and launched under a new name, OSTFRIESLAND. After being caught by the English in Germany during World War II, it was returned to France in 1945 and given back its original name, La Charente. The ship embarked on various journeys throughout its lifetime. It departed from Cherbourg for Toulon before setting sail for Saigon. For three years, it served as a vital refueling point between Singapore and Saigon. In 1950, La Charente was assigned to Marine Indochine until 1955 when it eventually made its way back to Toulon where it would be disarmed in 1959. This stunning print captured by Patrice Cartier not only showcases an exquisite piece of maritime engineering but also tells a compelling story of resilience and transformation amidst historical events.
