With the arrival of spring and the restoration of their supply lines, the Allies were able to begin a concerted bombardment of the defences of Sevastopol. Between 9 and 18 April 1855 the artillery fire was almost incessant, but the Russians repaired their defences every night. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Hot Night in the Batteries" takes us back to a significant moment during the Crimean War. Created by William Simpson and reproduced as a coloured tinted lithograph by E Walker in 1855, this artwork is part of The Seat of War in the East - First Series collection. The image captures the intense atmosphere of a British battery under siege during springtime. With their supply lines restored, the Allies launched a relentless bombardment on Sevastopol's defenses between April 9th and 18th, 1855. However, despite their efforts, the Russians diligently repaired their fortifications every night. In this particular scene, we witness an awe-inspiring sight as a gun discharges into the sky, illuminating it with fiery brilliance. Amidst this spectacle, gunners prepare other artillery pieces for firing. The print beautifully conveys both the power unleashed by these weapons and the determination of those involved in this fierce battle. The lithograph transports us to that historic moment when cannon fire echoed through Crimea's hot summer nights. It serves as a reminder of not only the bravery and skill exhibited by naval and army troops but also highlights how weather conditions can impact warfare strategies. Displayed at London's National Army Museum today, this remarkable piece offers viewers an opportunity to delve into history and appreciate both its artistic merit and historical significance.
