EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two lithographs by J. T. Bowen from 1850, featuring the exquisite bird species Ephialtes Watsonii and Ephialtes Sagittatus. These prints were originally hand-colored and appeared in the second series of the Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. On the left side (Pl. 12), we are introduced to a stunning Tawny-bellied Screech Owl (Ephialtes Watsonii) alongside a White-fronted Scops Owl (Ephialtes Sagittatus). The intricate details captured in these illustrations bring these majestic creatures to life, showcasing their unique features and beauty. Moving to the right side (Pl. 13), we encounter a Silky-tailed Nightjar (Antrostomus Serico-caudatus). This nocturnal bird is portrayed with remarkable precision, highlighting its silky plumage and distinctive characteristics. These taxonomic names were assigned by John Cassin, an esteemed American ornithologist who led the bird department at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia during this period. Cassin's expertise in ornithology is evident through his meticulous classification and identification of these avian species. The J. T. Bowen lithographic establishment played a significant role in bringing these prints to life, ensuring that every detail was accurately reproduced for scientific study and appreciation. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a valuable scientific resource, capturing nature's wonders for generations to come.
