EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a French merchant from the 16th century, beautifully captured by artist Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard. The image is derived from a manuscript presented to Louise of Savoy by the esteemed brotherhood of Notre-Dame-du-Puy d'Amiens. Dressed in vibrant yellow robes with a green waistcoat, the merchant exudes an air of elegance and sophistication. Every detail has been meticulously handcolored, bringing life to this historical illustration. The lithography work done by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie further enhances the richness and depth of the artwork. The merchant's attire is complete with a sword and dagger, symbolizing his status as a man of influence and power during that era. This depiction offers us a glimpse into the fashion trends prevalent in France during the 16th century. Published in Paris in 1867 as part of Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" this book was an extension of Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri's earlier series on costumes from previous centuries. Duplessis himself was renowned as curator at Bibliotheque nationale's Prints department. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard's talent shines through not only in this artwork but also in his contributions as an artist, book illustrator, and interior designer for various public buildings and churches throughout his career. This remarkable print serves as both an artistic masterpiece capturing history's essence and a testament to Lechevallier-Chevignard's immense skill.
