She was a famous beauty in her youth and in later years a formidable leader of society and fashion, known particularly for the magnificent jewellery she wore. She married the 8th Duke in 1892 when she was sixty, having formerly been married to the Duke of Manchester, thus gaining her name The Double Duchess.
